You probably missed it in all the excitement about everyone getting 280 characters to tweet with on Twitter, but they just announced that auto DM’s no longer work.
Spamming: You may not send automated Tweets or Direct Messages that are spam, or otherwise engage in spamming activity.
It’s probably one of the most welcomed changes on the site in a long time – we’ve run surveys in the past and overwhelmingly we’ve seen that no one likes those messages and they can persuade people to unfollow.
We did a small test with using auto DM’s with new followers a few years ago and found that it did encourage people to start talking, so perhaps sending new followers a DM to say hi is still a good idea, but now you’re able to be more personal and actually start a conversation rather than just spam people with your links!
