So a brand or agency has gotten in contact with you, offering some goods or payment for some sort of promotion by you. There are a few things that you need to consider and make sure that you fully understand before agreeing to anything…
What’s the timeline?
Make sure you understand up front when things are expected from you – first to make sure you’ll be available when the content is due to be posted (although even if you’re going to be free and available, it’s still a good idea to use something like Planoly to schedule an Instagram post or your own blog software to schedule a blog post)
What’s the payment?
Depending on many variables, you’ll want to figure out whether you’re getting paid in product or money and how – will you need to issue an invoice to request the payment? Will the payment be made by Paypal or direct to your bank? If the payment agreed is large enough, is the company willing to pay 50% up front and 50% after the work is published?
How can they use it?
Something that you are able to charge more for is whether the brand has image rights to the work you create. It’s also worth checking whether the contract they ask you to sign (and this could be as simple as their email correspondence) says that by accepting, you give them the rights to the images you create automatically.
How long do you have to keep it up?
This is something that influencers are considering more as they curate their feed – how long do you need to have the sponsored post in your timeline until you can archive it? This is something you’ll want to agree in advance to prevent any problems later.
